Silk is a magic substance that according to legend was discovered by a Chinese princess in 2697 BCE. Si-Ling-Shi noticed during her garden walks that a strange caterpillar was weaving a fine cocoon on a mulberry tree. After the butterfly emerged, the princess unwound the ball of thread from the abandoned cocoon - thus the beginnings of silk textile production.
Until 200 CE silk fabrics were the sole prerogative of the Chinese imperial family.
